Over the last 6 years, Muskingum County placed a strong focus on increasing school success by building Developmental Assets in youth. The “School Climate Assets” chart shows changes in youth perception of school climate since 2003. Currently, over 50% of Muskingum County schools have active or emerging Asset initiatives impacting how youth feel about their school. Great strides have been made regarding “bonding to school” and “teachers care about me”. However, similar to the nation as a whole, many youth in Muskingum County still do not experience that safe and supportive, caring school climate needed for school success. This is where Muskingum County will be focusing its future efforts.

Since beginning their Care Team initiative, Muskingum County focused many resources on improving mental health outcomes for youth. School and home based counseling services made accessing mental health services much more accessible. Over the last 4-5 years, educators and community members participated in a variety of mental health awareness and prevention trainings. Improved access to mental health services and education for professionals is beginning to make a positive impact on positive identity assets in their youth. In addition, the number of youth attempting suicide has also decreased from 16% to 14%. This 2% decrease equates to approximately 100 fewer youth making suicide attempts over the last six years! Again, while this data is terrific, the job isn’t complete until suicide attempts reach ZERO.
-Last year, Care Team Collaborative schools served children attending 9 schools in Muskingum County, 2 schools in Coshocton County and 1 school in Franklin County.
-- 5000 youth: received whole school prevention and Developmental Asset building
-- 255: received direct wrap around services
---67% received ongoing school based mental health services.
-Muskingum County Juvenile Court has had at least 250 youth per year successfully complete its Diversion Program since joining Care Team Collaborative -97% did NOT adjudicate w/in 1 year!

-In the last 3 years, students in Care Team Schools (3+ yrs) received 359 days more instructional time than similar schools due to decreased out of school suspensions
o Result: $2 Million Dollars un-wasted funds in OUR Care Team schools.
