Family and Community Engagement in Ohio

As Ohio’s educational reform movement strengthens, communities are beginning to research strategies for developing and implementing Family and Community Engagement Teams.  School districts will be expected to work in partnership with their county Family and Children First Council to develop and implement district and building strategic plans related to addressing non academic barriers to student success.

For many districts, this is a completely new endeavor. School district leadership and community leadership have not always worked hand in hand.  Some district leaders may not even know their Family and Children First Coordinator.  To learn more about the Ohio Family and Children First Council or to identify your county’s Coordinator and Chairperson, please visit the Ohio Family and Children First website: http://www.ohiofcf.org/people.asp?ct=1&contact=1

Ohio’s Partnerships for Success Academy’s April 2009 newsletter includes two important article regarding Ohio’s educational reform plan and the Family and Community Engagement process.
• The first is an article by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Deborah Delisle. In this article, she shares Ohio Department of Education’s commitment to reform and to fully engaging communities as partners in this process. It also offers insights into how this process may unfold over the next several years.
• The second is a feature on Care Team Collaborative and how our work is aligned and ready to support schools and communities as they enter into the Family and Community Engagement process.

Care Team Collaborative CAN Help!

The Care Team Collaborative framework is grounded in the research of over twenty top researchers in the fields of mental health, education, and youth development.  To learn more about the research behind our framework click here.

The Care Team Collaborative framework is a multi agency, systemic approach to meeting all children’s needs.  It is important for school and community partners to enter this work with a clear understanding that the ultimate goal is for your community to have a seamless system of care (birth-age 21) which supports every child and family.  The entire community must be willing to re-think the current systems (including fiscal and human resources) and identify ways to more effectively partner and improve outcomes for youth.  School districts, faculty members, agency directors, agency personnel and community members will all be asked to “think outside the box” and discover the true potential within your community.  This approach also requires a multiyear commitment. Schools will quickly see small changes in targeted youth but it can take 3-5 years before building wide changes in culture and climate are clearly visible.

The Care Team Collaborative framework is a “framework”, not a program. Care Team Collaborative staff provides cross agency training to help communities understand the framework but every Care Team school designs programs, practices and services according to the needs and gaps within the school community.  The Care Team Collaborative framework is not one size fits all.  Each Care Team school will follow key processes and monitor progress according to specific indicators, but how the school implements the framework is determined by the school faculty, staff and Care Team.

Care Team Collaborative is available to support communities interested in using the Care Team Collaborative Framework as the foundation for their Family and Community Engagement Plan.
